چکیده

Water is a scarce resource in Central Rift Valley of Ethiopia and major limiting factor for crop production. Onion one the economically important vegetable crops grown under irrigation central rift valley. The field experiment was conducted at Melkasa agricultural research center during dry season to identify conventional furrow application level with without mulch that maximizes productivity onion per unit water consumed enhanced carried out using RCB design having six treatments three replications. FAO’s recommended allowable Manageable depletion 100%. In this study 75%, 100% 125% were tested. analysis variance result indicated highly significant (P ≤ 0.05) differences yield, yield components WUE’s. highest 320.7 ton/ha obtained from 75%MAD which not significantly different 100%MAD level. terms use efficiency, gave IWUE all other treatment combinations. Yield efficiency based comparison had shown there difference between CWUE, treatment. Therefore, it can be concluded increased saving associated through Conventional mulch, solve problem shortage improve WUE reduction yield.75%MAD applied system appears promising alternative conservation labor negligible trade-off yield. YIELD AND STORABILITY OF ONION (Allium cepa L.) AS AFFECTED BY VARYING LEVELS OF IRRIGATION

Bulb yield and storability of onions (cv. BARI Piaj-1) was studied against five levels of irrigation viz., no irrigation, irrigation at 10, 15, 20, and 30 days interval. Yield and storage losses were increased gradually with increasing number of irrigation. The highest yield of onion was obtained with a total of six irrigations at 10 days interval and it was at par with treatment that received ...

Effect of sulphur application in onion (Allium cepa L.)

An experiment was conducted to study the effect of sulphur application on growth, yield and quality of onion at Horticulture Farm of Institute of Agriculture, Visva-Bharati, Sriniketan. The treatments consisted of six incremental doses of sulphur application (10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 kg ha-1) and no sulphur application (control, 0 kg S ha-1). Treatments were arranged in Randomized Block Design...

NUTRIENT DIAGNOSIS ( CND ) OF ONION ( Allium cepa L . )

Nutritional constraints often restrict yields of crops in farmers’ fields. Plant nutrient status is currently diagnosed using empirically derived nutrient norms from arbitrarily defined high and low yielding subpopulations above a quantitative yield target. Generic models can assist Compositional Nutrient Diagnosis (CND) in providing a yield cutoff value between high-and lowyielding subpopulati...

Estimation of Genetic Diversity in Onion (Allium cepa L.)

The experiment was conducted at the field laboratory of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur during November 2008 to March 2009 to estimate the genetic diversity of exotic and local onion. Ten genotypes of onion were evaluated for 16 characters in a randomized complete block design to study the genetic divergence throu...
